REFORMER VS MAT

Slide 1_edited.jpg

Prenatal Reformer Pilates

The Reformer is a piece of equipment that uses springs for resistance and is ideal for women who may need more support or want to modify their movements for comfort. Reformer Pilates offers specific advantages:

  • Adjustable Resistance
Allows for a customisable level of resistance, making it easier to adjust exercises for your: energy levels, body changes, and physical capabilities during pregnant.

  • Increased Support
Reformer springs and straps offer more support and assistance during exercises.

  • Focused Alignment
Reformer equipment supports proper alignment and posture, avoiding strain on your back and joints, particularly during the second and third trimesters.

  • Targeted Strengthening
Reformers allow for exercises to target specific muscle groups (core, glutes, legs), providing additional support that is essential for both pregnancy and labour.

  • Low Impact
Reformer Pilates is a low-impact option, ensuring that the joints and muscles are not strained, which is important during pregnancy.

Prenatal Mat Pilates

Mat Pilates uses your body weight and minimal equipment, providing a more accessible way to practice Pilates at home. While less supported than the Reformer, Mat Pilates still offers a wide range of prenatal benefits:

  • Convenience
Mat work can be done almost anywhere- at home or the clinic. Making this a great option for pregnant women.

  • Body Awareness
Develops a deeper connection to your body, encouraging awareness of your movements and breathing, which is essential during labour.

  • Variety of Exercises
You can do a variety of exercises from strengthening to stretching that can be adapted to suit different stages of pregnancy.

  • Adaptable to Needs
Mat work can be modified to reduce intensity or challenge your body as needed. During pregnant we adjust the types of exercises based on your comfort level and stage of your pregnancy.

  • Flexibility and Mobility
Mat exercises focus on lengthening and stretching your muscles, which can alleviate tightness in your hips, back, and legs—areas that tend to get tight during pregnancy.

Which One is Better for You?

Both Reformer and Mat Pilates offer great benefits for prenatal care. The choice depends on personal preferences, access to equipment, and your physical comfort. Some pregnant women prefer the extra support and resistance the Reformer provides, while others may enjoy the flexibility and accessibility of Mat Pilates.

If you're looking for:

  • More Support and Resistance: The Reformer might be the better option for you, particularly if you're seeking extra stability and assistance with your movements.

  • A More Portable and Flexible Routine: Mat Pilates could be your best bet if you prefer to practice at home or in settings where the Reformer is unavailable.
